Complex Towhead Transport Project
NXGEN have successfully delivered a complex
transport & engineering solution to relocate five
towhead structures from Wick Harbour.
As part of the global energy transition, Baltic Power Offshore Windfarm tasked UTC, supported by NXGEN, with the loadin and transportation of four transformers from the port to the project site. This operation was essential for advancing the development of the wind farm, which plays a key role within the renewable energy sector.
The route to site was challenging and over 46km in length, therefore thorough preparation was required from the UTC team to ensure the operation could be carried out safely and efficiently, in collaboration with NXGEN. This included meticulous planning and route analysis for the transport operation.
“Using the extensive knowledge and experience within our team, we engineered a solution to utilise two 14 axle SPMTs in 3 file configuration. Not only is this a fairly unusual combination, but we also had a very limited mobilisation window, so we had to design the solution, build the equipment and be ready at the port within a short time period.” Explained Russ Jones, Director at NXGEN.
NXGEN’s SPMT operators completed the loadin operation of all four transformers, each weighing 354Te. Then the team were able to start the 46km journey with the first two transformers.
The first transport operation took place over three consecutive nights, with a day shift also in place to prepare and refuel for the journey the following night. Once the first two transformers were successfully delivered to site, the operation was repeated for the remaining two components.
